Dry your own tomatoes. Cut Romas tomatoes in lengthwise halves, or slice ripe regular tomatoes into half inch slices for drying. Place on a cooling rack, cut-side up and lightly salt them. Waxy potatoes are great for boiling and potato salads while other potatoes are better for making french fries, baked potatoes and mashed potatoes. For those culinary exercises, you should use potatoes that are fluffy, such as Russets.

Leave raw potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes before frying them to make crispier French fries. When potatoes are allowed to absorb cold water, the texture is able to withstand the extreme heat of cooking without breaking down and becoming mushy.

Do you want to cook with fresh basil? Try putting a bunch of basil that is fresh inside a glass. Next, ensure the stems are covered with water. Keep it on the kitchen counter and it should stay fresh. With some care, you may even be able to encourage the basil to grow roots.
