Sugar Pretzels Recipe


120 g margarine

20 g fresh yeast

125 ml milk (lukewarm)

320 g plain flour

1 egg beaten

1 tsp salt

pinch of ground cardamom

1 egg yolk

sugar crystals to decorate


  • Whisk yeast with milk.

  • Melt margarine and stir in beaten egg, salt and cardamom.

  • Sift flour into a bowl, make a well and add in yeast and margarine mixture. Mix to form a soft dough. Knead until smooth.

  • Immediately shape dough into a thick long roll. Cut into 24 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long strip (16 inches lengths).

  • Form strip into pretzels and glaze with egg yolk. Press sugar crystals on one side.

  • Heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until light golden.

  • Cool pretzels on wire rack.
